Flow Builder or Journey Builder?

1 min readMarketing Cloud Next

Two automation tools, one platform. A simple way to decide which owns a given piece of logic.

  • Flow Builder
  • Journey Builder
  • Architecture

With Engagement+ you end up holding both. Flow Builder, from the platform, with triggers, branches, decisions and message sends that reach natively into Sales, Service and Data 360. And Journey Builder, which you already know.

The distinction I use

Journey Builder is for a person's experience over time — a sequence someone is inside, with waits and paths. Flow is for what the business does when something happens — a record changes, a case closes, an order ships. One is a story; the other is a rule.

In practice

  • Cross-object logic, CRM records, platform actions: Flow.
  • Multi-step nurture with waits, goals and channel sequencing: Journey Builder.
  • Both: a Flow that decides and then hands off, using a send-to-journey action.

That handoff is the pattern worth learning. It keeps the business rules in one place, readable by whoever maintains the org, and leaves the journey to do what journeys are good at.

The same advice I'd give about Automation Studio applies here: logic split across two tools is fine, logic duplicated across two tools is not.
