Event-Triggered Flows in Marketing Cloud Next

1 min readMarketing Cloud Next

A short note on moving from batch sends to flows that start the moment something happens — and what that demands of your data.

  • Flow
  • Real time

The pitch for event-triggered flows is simple: instead of picking a date, building a list and hoping the timing is relevant, the flow starts when the customer does something. The catch is that a near-real-time trigger is only as good as the event reaching the platform.

What has to be true first

  • The event is actually emitted by a system you control, with a timestamp you trust.
  • The event carries enough identity to resolve to a person, not just a session.
  • Someone has decided what happens when the same event fires twice.
  • There is a frequency rule, or the responsive campaign becomes the annoying one.

Design the quiet path

Every event-triggered flow needs an answer for the customer who triggers it and then completes the action thirty seconds later. Usually that is a short wait before the message, and a check that the reason still holds. It is one extra element and it is the difference between helpful and clumsy.

Testing

Batch campaigns can be proofed. Event-driven ones have to be rehearsed: fire a real event from the real source system in a sandbox and watch it land. A flow that works when you click "run" tells you almost nothing.
